  • FIFA rankles coach Canada No. 61, but Osieck unimpressed By TONY MARASCHIELLO -- Toronto Sun Holger Osieck has little time -- or respect, for that matter -- for FIFA's international soccer rankings. The head coach of the Canadian men's team yesterday scoffed at FIFA's March rankings, which rewarded Canada for its shocking performance at last month's Gold Cup in Los Angeles. Canada shot up 24 places to No. 61 in the world. It was the biggest jump of the month among the more than 200 ranked nations and gave Canada its best showing since No. 59 in September 1997. "I'm not impressed at all," Osieck said. "FIFA rewards a country like China for beating Guam 19-0. That's like us playing a junior team and beating them 20-0. The whole ranking system just doesn't make any sense." FIFA's archaic system takes into consideration things such as performances in major international events, past performances, wins over quality opponents and scoring. Canada upset Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and Colombia to capture the prestigious Gold Cup, the country's first major international trophy. Yet, FIFA has Canada tied with Kuwait at No. 61, just behind Honduras. Osieck said that while the Canadian players and fans should be proud of the move up the rankings, he doesn't need affirmation from FIFA that his program is on the rise. "Beating a team like Mexico (No. 10 in the world) was the most important thing for me," Osieck said. "It's how we progress that counts for me as a coach." Canada's move from No. 85 last month continues the steady climb the team has enjoyed since Osieck took over the program 16 months ago. Canada was 101st in the FIFA rankings in December 1998. Canada's climb in the rankings could make it easier for Canadian players to find work overseas, Osieck said. In Britain, for instance, foreign players requesting work permits must be natives of a country with a FIFA ranking of 70th or better.
