WORLD CUP 2002 Draw list

The preliminary draw for the qualifying rounds for the 2002 World Cup to be staged in Japan and South Korea, June 1 to 30, 2002.

Asia/AFC - 40

Group 1

Oman, Syria, Laos, and Phillipines

Group 2

Iran, Tajikistan, Myanmar, and Guam

Group 3

Qatar, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and Palestine

Group 4

Kuwait, Singapore, Bahrain, and Kyrgyzstan

Group 5

Thailand, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan

Group 6

Iraq, Kazakhstan, Nepal, and Macao

Group 7

Uzbekistan, Jordan, Turkmenistan, and Taiwan

Group 8

United Arab Emirates, Yemen, and Brunei

Group 9

China, Indonesia, Maldives, and Cambodia

Group 10

Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Mongolia The 10 group winners qualify for the Asian final round, drawn into two groups of five teams. The two winners qualify for the World Cup finals, and the two runner-ups go into a playoff, with the winner playing a European team for a spot in the World Cup finals.

Oceania/OFC - 10

Group 1

Australia, Tonga, Fiji, American Samoa, and Samoa

Group 2

New Zealand, Tahiti, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Cook Islands The winners of the two groups will compete in a playoff. The winner of that playoff competes in a home/away playoff against the team finishing fifth in the South American playdowns. The winner of that playoff will qualify for the World Cup finals.

South America/CONMEBOL - 10

The 10 teams will play a qualifying tournament in a league system. The top four teams qualify will qualify for the World Cup finals and the fifth place team plays against the winner of the Oceania qualifications. The winner qualifies for the World Cup finals.

North, Central America and CARIBBEAN/CONCACAF - 40

Caribbean Zone 1

Cuba vs Cayman Islands; St. Lucia vs Surinam; Aruba vs Puerto Rico; Barbados vs Grenada.

Caribbean Zone 2

St. Vincent vs US Virgin Islands; St. Kitts & Nevis vs Turks and Caicos Islands; Guyana vs Antigua and Barbuda; British Virgin Islands v Bermuda.

Caribbean Zone 3

Trinidad & Tobago vs Netherlands Antilles; Dominican Republic vs Monserrat; Dominica vs Haiti; Anguilla vs Bahamas.

Central American Zone

Group A

El Salvador, Belize, and Guatemala.

Group B

Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Mexico, Jamaica, United States and Costa Rica go straight into the semifinal round. The top three teams from the final group advance to the World Cup finals.

Africa/CAF - 50

Group A

Cape Verde v Algeria; Mauritiana v Tunisia; Benin v Senegal; Guinea-Bissau v Togo; Gambia v Morocco.

Group B

Lesotho v South Africa; Swaziland v Angola; Botswana v Zambia; Madagascar v Gabon; Sudan v Mozambique.

Group C

Equatorial Guinea v Congo; Libya v Mali; Rwanda v Ivory Coast; Sao Tome & Principe v Sierra Leone; Central African Republic vs Zimbabwe.

Group D

Somalia v Cameroon; Mauritius v Egypt; Eritrea v Nigeria; Djibouti v Congo Democratic Republic; Seychelles vs Namibia.

Group E

Chad v Liberia; Uganda va Guinea; Ethiopia v Burkina Faso; Malawi v Kenya; Tanzania v Ghana. The 25 winners are divided into five groups containing five teams each. The draw is held after the first round. The five group winners will advance to the World Cup finals.

Europe/UEFA - 50

Group 1

Yugoslavia, Russia, Switzerland, Slovenia, Faroe Islands, and Luxembourg.

Group 2

Netherlands, Portugal, Ireland, Cyprus, Andorra, and Estonia.

Group 3

Czech Republic, Denmark, Bulgaria, Iceland, N. Ireland, and Malta.

Group 4

Sweden, Turkey, Slovakia, Macedonia, Azerbaijan, and Moldova.

Group 5

Norway, Ukraine, Poland, Wales, Armenia, and Belarus.

Group 6

Belgium, Croatia, Scotland, Latvia, and San Marino.

Group 7

Spain, Austria, Israel, Bosnia-Hercegovina, and Liechtenstein.

Group 8

Romania, Lithuania, Italy, Hungary, and Georgia.

Group 9

Germany, England, Greece, Finland, and Albania. Group winners advance to the World Cup finals. Eight runners-up go into a playoff to determine four more qualifiers. Another runner-up meets an Asian team in the final playoff.
